Join the LA chapter of the National Lawyers Guild as we watch ZOOT SUIT at the MARK TAPER FORUM on its closing night --- Sunday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m.
The National Lawyers Guild has reserved 77 seats for this performance with each ticket costing either $60, $80, $100 for rows J-M on the left and right sides of the theater.
The Zoot Suit story represents a critical lesson -- that, left unchecked, racial profiling, discrimination, and mass hysteria leads to violence and unjust results in the courts. For the Sleepy Lagoon defendants, it led to the worst fate the legal system has to offer -- convictions for murder.
Yet, National Lawyers Guild attorneys in Los Angeles were there and played a pivotal role in achieving justice. The appeal of the convictions was led by NLG founder and Los Angeles activist Ben Margolis and included other Lawyers Guild attorneys. In 1944, the California Court of Appeals overturned the convictions based on insufficient evidence, the denial of the right to counsel because the defendants were kept separated from their lawyers during the full trial, and judicial bias.
