This edition of "The Lawyers Guild Show" December 21st edition of The Lawyers Guild Show will explore the topic: "Hollywood Goes to War."  Professor Steve Ross, Chair of the USC History
Department and author of books on Hollywood and politics, will be a featured guest. The show will look at how Hollywood today is responding to the government's desire for more "patriotic" films and tv programming. The show will also hear an analysis of December 18th's federal court ruling in the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal.

This edition of "The Lawyers Guild Show" continued our "teach-in" on the president's war efforts and the response of the progressive communities.  This week's topic focused on the domestic fall-out from the US war in Afghanistan.  We looked at how certain industries have been hit in terms of  lay-offs and how war expenditures are eating into spending for domestic needs.  Guests included the labor leader David Sickler; Jim Clarke, and a representative of the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (www.laane.org).

This edition of "The Lawyers Guild Show" continued our "teach-in" on the president's war efforts and the response of the progressive communities.  It focused on the environmental impacts of our country's war. Guests represented the Natural Resources Defense Council (www.nrdc.org); Global Green (www.globalgreen.org); and Environmental Defense (www.enviornmentaldefense.org).

This edition of "The Lawyers Guild Show" continued our "teach-in" on the president's war efforts and the response of the progressive communities.  It featured Prof. Ann Fagan Ginger (see http://www.mcli.org) discussing Prof. Alan Dershowitz's defense of the use of torture in US jails in connection with the September 11th attacks and Attorney Nancy Chang of the Center for Constitutional Rights discussing the massive detentions of Muslims in the US since September 11th and the conditions of those detentions.  It also discussed breaking news about the detention of Los Angeles area activist Lisa Fithian by Canadian authorities as she attempted to enter Ottawa for the G20-IMF-World Bank protests scheduled for this weekend.  During the show it was announced that Lisa had been released and allowed to remain in Canada.

This edition of "The Lawyers Guild Show" addressed the Los Angeles Unified School District's broken promise to children with disabilities.  In 1996, the District agreed to settle a class action lawsuit -- known as the Chanda Smith case -- brought by more 60,000 children whose civil rights were being violated.  Now, the new leadership of the District, under Superintendent Roy Romer, is trying to evade the Consent Decree and its commitment to children and their parents.  Guests were Valerie Vanaman of Newman.Aaronson. This edition of "The Lawyers Guild Show"  involved a discussion  with attorneys and activists who, on August 9, 2001, filed suit against the LAPD for its violent and illegal suppression of protest activities during last summer's Democratic Party Convention and during the anti-police abuse protest of last October 22nd. The plaintiff groups are: the D2K Coalition; the L.A. Coalition to Stop the Execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal; the L.A. Chapter of the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Abuse, Repression & the Criminalization of a Generation; and the L.A. Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild. The attorneys and activists described their lawsuit and how it relates to the growing wave of repressive tactics employed by police against protesters all around the world.  Click here for more information on the lawsuit.

This edition of "The Lawyers Guild Show" featured three subjects: 1.  A discussion  with Stefano Sensi, an Italian doctor and long-time Italian political activist now working at UC Irvine.  Dr. Sensi was in Genoa during the G-8 protests helping those injured in the police assaults. 2.  A discussion with Jeff Mackler, the Coordinator of the San Francisco Mobilization to Free Mumia, about recent legal and political developments in the case of death row prisoner, Mumia Abu-Jamal, who is due to be back in court on August 17th.  For more information, see www.freemumia.org. 3.  A discussion with a representative of the Rainforest Action Network to talk about the arrest of Bonnie Raitt and others who were protesting the old-growth logging practices of Boise Cascade Office Products, practices the protesters claim lead to deforestation.  For more information, www.ran.org.
